GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Union Station was officially opened on October 9, 1900.  It was the "union station" for the Louisville and Nashville (L&N) Railroad and the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis (NC&StL) Railroad which by 1900 was owned by the L&N RR.

The tower featured a digital clock that never had the accuracy of a railroad conductor's watch.  Union Station had two alligator ponds, a copper statue of Mercury on the top of the tower, and a beautiful interior.  The alligator ponds are gone and Mercury was blown off the tower and recently replaced by a smaller steel replica.  On April 16, 1998, a tornado blew the steel Mercury to a 90 degree angle.  It was straightened on June 27, 1998, with the aid of cranes used to reach the top of the 222 foot tower.

Union Station is now a hotel, a Wyndham Historic Hotel.  The restaurant, Prime 109, is located in the lobby area of the Union Station Hotel.  The hotel and lobby are open to the public and it is well worth seeing if you are in Nashville.

George B. Kirchner hand-colored and restored the original black and white antique lithograph print of Union Station.  This finely detailed print of the old train station captures the spirit of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.  Old trains, streetcars, fashionable ladies and the Station's stained glass windows are visible.   Even two ladies in a horseless carriage are included.
